Lost Nalgenes :(

Someone stole my and Smeri's nalgenes at sectionals on Sunday! Ok maybe "stole" is a harsh word, but we definitely had it before the last point of the last game, and then when we were getting ready to leave after the game, we couldn't find them!! And everyone else was pretty much gone and nothing was left on the fields, so someone must've picked it up... and done what with it?! I talked to the TD afterwards and she said no one had turned it in. Bryan and I even did a drive-by of the fields and I dug in trashcans to see if someone just tossed it but I couldn't find it.

And Smeri's nalgene had her name on it in large capital letters, and mine has a bunch of stickers on it (UPA - Play Ultimate, Life is Good, In-N-Out, Sunday River...) so no one could possibly mistake it for theirs. Gahhh I'm so sad... my nalgene has so much sentimental value to me. I've had it for 5 years (won it at Northwestern at a drawing for recycling and being green). It was with me when I started playing ultimate at NU. It has hydrated me on my travels to various counties including Taiwan, Brazil, bunch of European cities. It has gone with me to nationals and countless tournaments I've played in. Wahhhhh. It sounds silly and you might be thinking, "Oh it's just a nalgene... you can get another one for $10" but I was really attached to it :(

Smeri is going to email the Stonehill/Brandeis people who were playing on the field over who we were sharing a sideline with and who might've picked it up after the tournament, but we'll see what happens...

Amy also lost her awesome red/pink jacket and I think it was on that sideline as well. :(

Sectionals Day 2

The cliffnotes version again...

Executive summary: We came in 7th and we're going to regionals!!!

Conditions: Warmer than yesterday (started off at low-50s, high of mid-60s), slightly windy but not as windy as yesterday.

- During warm-up throws (even before we did our warm-up jog and routine), Becky limps off to the sideline and says that she twisted her other ankle. Ahhhh. She got it taped and was good to go for the last two games.

Round 5: MIT vs Northeastern B (9-3)
- Worked on man defense: dictating and forcing them out
- Michelle, Anna and I for zone O and it worked out really well.
- Floaty huck to Agnes on the sideline, which she ran down and caught :D
- Ethan did really well in zone O as well
- In one point I make a dump cut for Smeri and don't get open. Then Smeri tries to thread it to Anna and somwhere upfield, and Smeri throws the disc (really hard!) into my defender's face. The disc flies 10 feet up in the air, and Smeri catches the disc again. My defender is clutching her face in pain as she walks off the field, and Smeri's mark is like, "I don't think that's legal" (referring to Smeri catching her own throw.) And Smeri's like, "yeah it is, it hit her face." I think Smeri even said something along the lines of, "Yeah we've been practicing bouncing it off people and catching it again." haha omg smeri... ...
- Great cuts from Alex, Patricia, Ashley, and Carolyn in ho-stack and zone O

Round 6: MIT vs Harvard (6-9)
- Defense was straight up to backhand/forehand
- Sideline super involved and running with the players on the field. Up calls and echoing really helped a lot
- sMITe played an awesome game, took half 6-5, but lost overall 6-9
- Pumped us up and kept up our intensity for the next two games!

First game in 7th place bracket: MIT vs BU (8-7)
- I learned that if I call a pick on my girl and Anna is affected by the pick (her girl goes deep and Anna can't follow because she is also picked) and her girl catches the disc, the disc goes back to the thrower, even if Anna didn't have to call pick.
- I D-ed someone when I was completely out of position. I was standing behind her in the endzone, and reached between her two hands above her head to tip the disc. I've never felt so tall :)
- Ashley threw her first forehand in a game!
- For a few points I played the 4th person in the 4-man cup, guarding crashes and upfield throws and got multiple turnovers by covering the crash. Someone on BU crashed through the cup and I got the D, but bounced off the girl who was crashing and landed on the sideline, and she landed on top of me. I was literally on my hands and knees and her face was around my torso as she tried not to land completely full-weight on me... very awkward. And I heard a bunch of BU girls heckling, "Why don't you guys just make out? Why don't you just get her number??" And by the time we both got up, Cindy was calling injury for me and Becky had the disc on the far sideline of the field. Very bizarre... But I wasn't injured so play resumed. =P
- Agnes did our "cheese" play successfully and it was awesome.
- Ashley and Carolyn switched off as the trap mark in the four-man cup and it worked really well. Great job guys :)
- Karen threw a high-release backhand to Carolyn in the endzone. Bad Karen... bad bad Karen. So glad Carolyn caught that =P
- Michelle clutch as deep deep and got many turnovers
- Last point was an epic 20-minute point where both soft cap and hard cap went on during the point when it was 7-7. Becky had multiple run-through Ds and was amazing during this point. We ended up scoring by an around break from Amy to Smeri at the front of the stack in the endzone.

For 7th place (last bid to regionals): MIT vs Wellesley (11-8)
- During one point Smeri got the D and I went deep for her but her huck was short and it went into a Wellesley girl's hands. And Smeri said, "maybe we shouldn't do dumb stuff like that anymore." =P
- Mangpo caught a D on a swing throw from a handler and it was awesome
- A pull play: Amy to Karen to Smeri in the endzone... Smeri laid out for it and got a finger on it but it was too far :( Sorry Smeri.
- Wellesley mis-threw something to one of their cutters and the cutter stepped on the disc and put two holes through it. The coach tried to say that we have to keep playing with the warped disc but I showed him that I could put my finger through it so we got a new disc :)
- Many many awesome dump cuts from Amy and Becky in this game.
- Last point: Karen threw a flick huck to Anna in the endzone for the score

Yeah sMITe!!! Way to make Regionals!!!!

Complete scores: http://scores.upa.org/scores/#college-womens/tournament/6615

Congrats to the men's team for also making regionals! They beat out BU for the 5th (and last) bid to regionals 11-9: http://scores.upa.org/scores/#college-open/tournament/6578

Thanks to everyone who came out to support us... Bryan, Atong, Daphne, MattyB, Matt Deberg, and the entire Harvard and Inman CGs :D

Now I have about 500 pictures to sift through so hopefully the next post will have a lot of pics :)

Sectionals Day 1

The cliftnotes version:

Conditions: Super duper crosswindy for all four games, high of 50s

Round 1: MIT vs Wellesley (8-4)
- We played on a field with a tree that partly overhangs into the tree
- The tree helped us get a lot of Ds
- We went up 3-0 for the first three points
- Lots of zone O and D for both teams, bendy throws were key
- Worked on 4-man cup
- First point of the game, Agnes catches a floaty disc among a group of people in the endzone for the score

Round 2: MIT vs Stonehill (3-11)
- Lots of drops by us
- Threw a lot of hucks away (my bad)
- Stonehill frequently looking to throw it deep
- Daisy had a lot of nice grabs in the zone as a popper
- Cindy was key playing deep in zone O

Round 3: MIT vs Wellesley B (11-2)
- Practiced man defense, then clam, the zone
- Fun times for all

Round 4: MIT vs Northeastern (4-11)
- Fun, intense game
- In one point, I marked up against Michelle on Northeastern. She threw away a high release because of my amazing mark. And then I dropped an easy swing in the next possession because of her intimidating presence on D.
- Tried clam on Northeastern but they had a lot of quick throws to generate flow
- Zone defense was not really effective because the mark kept getting broken
- Played man defense and worked pretty well
- Difficult to convert offensive flow to scores
- Good zone O swinging the disc across the field and crashing the cup to gain yards

Tomorrow: Last two pool games against Northeastern B and Harvard. Then playing in the 7th place bracket. We have to win the last two games of the day. Go SMITe!!!

Yale Cup Day 2

So we were supposed to play Princeton Sunday morning at 10am but we got a call from Yale on Sat night saying that Princeton left so we had a first round bye on Sunday morning. We ended up going to the fields and practicing our I/O and O/I throws. Smeri and I worked on pulling. Jin said a lot of stuff but the few things I gained from that pulling lesson were:

- start with your back towards the field (facing the endzone closer to you)
- bend over a lot to gain as much distance between your body and the disc
- then draw your arm in a straight line across your body, pulling the disc in the direction you want it to go in
- aaaand: end up looking like an airplane that's going to crash once you've released the disc
(hahah Jin don't give up on me yet)

Anyway, I tried it a couple times during the games on Sunday and mostly I didn't seen any difference in the distance that I normally pull, but I think I just have to practice it a lot more.

First game: vs. Northeastern (9-11)

Our first game of the day was against Northeastern who played a lot of FM and trap 4-man cup. On the first point, Smeri hucks to Cindy for the score, and Northeastern answers back with a score of their own. In the next point, Northeastern puts on a 4-man trap cup. Smeri throws over the cup to Carolyn and then comes to get the dish from Carolyn. Then the play stops for like a minute and I'm on the sideline with Shuangy, speculating what just happened. It turns out that Carolyn handed off the disc to Smeri, Northeastern called violation, and they all just stood there, not knowing what to do after violation was called. Turns out the disc went back to Carolyn, who had sprinted off after the hand-off. =P

We had a lot of great flow in zone offense where the disc was constantly moving and there was a lot of swinging back and forth among the handlers. In another point Smeri hucks it to Ashley who is standing in the endzone, and Ashley jumps between two Northeastern girls to grab the disc for the score!! Soon the score is tied at the half 7-5, Northeastern up.

Our defense was looking pretty good during this game with a lot of high-stall throws from Northeastern. Carolyn was really field-aware and caught a lot of hucks in the endzone for the score. Our rookies are awesome this year :D Final score 11-9 Northeastern.

Second game: vs. Wesleyan (6-9)
Wesleyan started off playing a 4-man trap cup on us. Becky and I worked it back and forth and they called man as we neared the endzone. Smeri threw to Karen going up the line for the score. Wesleyan scored the next three points using hucks that we weren't able to stop. We answered by playing some trap cup and ourselves. It was fun playing in the cup with Smeri (Anna was deep deep). Ashley was our third person in the cup and stopped a lot of up-field throws. We answered with 4 points in a row to make the score 5-3.

Wesleyan stepped up their defense and scored the next three points, then eventually they took half 7-6. We lost the last two points to make the score 9-6 Wesleyan.

Also happy belated birthday to Anna the easter bunny!

Yale Cup Day 1 - video

To make up for my memory-fail for Saturday of Yale Cup, here's a video of us playing Swarthmore Warmothers, our second game of the day:

1. Swarthmore pulls and Meri catches it to Amy hitch, who throws it to
2. Cindy cutting in, who dumps it to
3. Smeri the bailout dump cut, who throws upfield to
4. Anna cutting in, who then passes it to
5. Cindy cutting in, who dumps it to
6. Becky who made an awesome fake to cut up the line. She then puts a beautiful flick huck to
7. Anna in the endzone!!!

As you can tell, I was SUPER excited for our very own up-and-coming handler Becky. haha :) This is not to minimize all of the other amazing things that happened this weekend by many people... it's just what I happened to get on video =P

Btw, do I always sound that ridiculous on the field?

T minus 5 days until sectionals this weekend in Portsmouth, RI. Come watch us!

Yale Cup Day 1

Note: Shuangy took really good notes for me and I forgot to get them from her before she went to Tross' place for the night :( Now I'm forced to try and remember everything that happened today.

It was a high of 65 and the first two rounds wasn't that windy, and the wind picked up for the 3rd and 4th games. We are currently hanging out at the Berkeley College dorm, showering and chilling. A lot of people are sunburnt.

Game 1: MIT vs BU (13-5)
We started off the day playing BU. We started off in ho-stack and man defense and switched to clam at some point.

Game 2: MIT vs Swarthmore (7-12)
Anna scored a lot. Which is awesome because she used to go to Swarthmore.

Sigh... I don't remember anything that happened. I give up. Shuannggyyyyy...

Blooooood

About a month ago I got a physical exam with CBC (complete blood count) at MIT Medical. The results were all normal except for my hematocrit, which is 32.8% (normal is 36-47%) and my MCV (mean corpuscular volume) which is 69.6 (normal is 80-99). Hematocrit is the % of blood volume that has red blood cells (RBC). MCV is a measure of RBC size. So not only do I have very few RBC, they're tiny. (I had an idea of my anemia before getting the CBC because my dad told me not to give blood but I was never really sure why.)

The small size of RBC can be due to iron deficiency or abnormal proteins in the RBC. But my iron levels were normal so the doctor said I probably have alpha-thalassemia, which is a form of anemia that is characterized by a decreased amount of alpha chains (normal hemoglobin has two alpha and beta chains each). It's common in Asians. =P

Anyway, so what does this mean for me? Apparently nothing! Since I've had this anemia for my entire life, my body compensates for it and I'm perfectly fine. The only time I need to be concerned about it is when Bryan and I want to have kids (hopefully not soon). But I'm pretty sure he doesn't have it and since it's a recessive disorder it doesn't really affect us. =P
