Hatch discs!

Hatch got discs! Bree designed them and they're so cute!! We call it the "awkward bird." Haha. I'm sold out but Smerbear and Dorbear both have a few to sell if you're interested.

A day in the life of...

http://aditl.mit.edu/

I saw this on one of the many listservs I'm subscribed to: "A day in the life of MIT" a "photographic collaboration" managed by the yearbook at MIT. You're supposed to take pictures of what you're doing and document your day for the entire day (from midnight to midnight of 9/24/09). Maybe I'll do it tomorrow and just post the pics on here. It'll give me something interesting to do and maybe show everyone how boring my life is. Anyway, you should do it too!!!

Toenail amputation (not mine)

After club sectionals on Sunday, Bryan had a bloody toenail so he disinfected a drill bit with rubbing alcohol and then drilled his toenail to let the blood out and relieve pressure. Just in case you're wondering, he didn't use the actual drill, just the drill bit. Then on Monday morning his toe was twice its normal size, red and puffy, and obviously infected. He was limping around all day so Monday night Keith drove me and Bryan to the ER. Last thing he said was, "Make sure you get the hot doctor." Bryan: "Hot doctor, alright, got it."

At the ER (paraphrased):
Hot doctor (she was actually hot): Yep, that's definitely infected. So what were you doing??
B: I was playing ultimate frisbee, wearing cleats that were too small for my giant pancake-like feet
HD: Whoa, then what did you do?
B: I drained my toe with a drill bit
HD: Good job! That's what we would've done
B: Yessss
HD: Wow, that takes a lot of concentration... I can't believe you drilled your toe
B: Um, just so you know, I just used the drill bit, not the entire drill
HD: Ohhhhh I was thinking you took an electric drill to your foot. That would require a lot of focus...

Then they gave him oxycodone ("which will make you a bit loopy") and then a few minutes later, gave him local anesthetics on both sides of his big toe. She then explained that the pus is basic and the anesthetics are acidic so sometimes the anesthetics are neutralized and isn't that effective (great...).

HD: I'm going to drain the pus from your toe, and I'm going to try to leave the toenail, but just so you know, it might have to come off.
B: Okay...
HD: Tell me if it hurts okay?
B: What?! I thought it's numbed...
HD: Well, it is... just tell me if it hurts
B: Okay...

I tried distracting Bryan by bringing out his laptop and watching Alias on it but I dont' think it was working because he just kept his eyes closed and fists clenched the entire time. I was peaking around the laptop screen to see what was going on and it was probably the most disgusting thing I ever saw. His toenail did eventually have to come off (she just used scissors and cut it off). Then a huge glob of neosporin antibacterial stuff went on the nailbed cavity and then she wrapped it in a bunch of gauze and tape.

HD: Do you want to see it [your amputated toenail]?
B: Uh. No. Karen do you want to see it?
K: I already saw it :( :( :(

He got pain meds from CVS this morning so if you see Bryan you should aim for the times that he takes the oxycodone because he is a bit more loopy than usual and it's kinda entertaining :)

Getting old :( ... and apple picking!!

I used to pride myself in not ever getting injured. I've been playing ultimate for 4 years now and up until this summer I've never really had any injuries, minor or serious. But lately during this club season I've had random annoyances (injuries seem to be overstating it). In the last two months I have had tendonitis in my ankle/lower shin area, pain/tightness in my loser hamstring right behind my knee, and a sore back after every tournament or double practice. I'm convinced that even mosquitoes like biting me more now. Anyway, I really love ultimate but my Mondays are so unproductive because I'm so exhausted/sore/depressed after tournaments or Sunday practices.

This past weekend I went apple picking with like 15 other people. It was such a beautiful day and I had a lot of fun. Here's Sluts (now captain captain of sMITe) showing off her guns (i.e. capability of handling captain captain duties. hehe)

Then I went to Antrim to watch the NU vs Syracuse football game (which NU lost by a field goal in the last second of the game! Argh...). The highlights of the night included eating apple crisp made from freshly picked apples, singing the NU fight song (which I hadn't done for 3 years), and seeing LARRY! He decided to play in a couple boxes before climbing upstairs and poking around near Charles' bed so Charles threw him out of the house (not literally of course).

Question

Imagine this: you're defending the dump, who sets up on the breakside of the disc and cuts up the line. Do you stay in between the dump and the disc facing the dump, or do you stay in front of both of them so you can see both of them. If you stay in between them, you'll have a play on the disc, but you're faceguarding the dump so you can't see when the disc has gone up. If you stay in front of them, the throw goes up and you have to go around she to put the mark on and she has an open look for 1-2 stall counts.

I'm trying to learn to stay in between the thrower and the dump when she goes up the line but for some reason it's very counterintuitive for me. :(

Pictures from Club Sectionals!

Team huddle - we have so many people! 23 I think?

Nell almost getting a D

My favorite throw

Daphne's flick

Frisbee makes me happy :) People say that I get this absurd grin on my face whenever I'm about to throw a break/huck/hammer

Shira, one of our captains, who used to play for Tufts.

Michelle, who's constantly broken but still pushes through. She's also a disc hog like me but we still manage to work well together.

This is Daphne skying everyone on the field.

Close-up! I think right before this Keith yelled, "Daphne be tall!" and then she jumped and grabbed the disc. And then threw it away at our end zone. ::groan::

Me throwing. Cutters get all the good pictures.

Doris' layout D in the endzone.

Not sure what happened here, but this is Morgan who also plays for Northeastern and she has the sickest grabs ever. If she's close to the disc, it's hers. Well, maybe not in this pic :(

Bernie, another one of our captains. She also went to Tufts (we have a lot of Tufts people on Hatch!)

Typical Doris face during a typical Doris catch.

Jenny trying to grab the disc before it hits the ground but no success. It was a poor throw.

The boys fooling around during half time.

The new Karen, aka Butterball, the reason why I'm Midlife. I like how the black rubber pellets are flying up behind her as she slides into her catch.

"We hate everyone and just wanna go home"
BUDA Tournament, Aug. 15 & 16, 2009

Haha, only slightly kidding... It was really hot that day and we everyone was kinda miserable. More pictures to come soon.
